Stress: When You Just Want to Disappear

It would be easy to tell someone that the overwhelm and frustration they feel is something that will pass quickly. It would be easy to tell them their feeling of wanting to disappear would pass easily. The truth is sometimes we just don’t feel ok and if you have a day or two here and there like that you’re in the company of many others who have felt the same way.

2020 has been a really challenging year worldwide. With each month, so many wonder what the heck is coming next while hoping that the only thing coming is good news. It has been tough. It has been different. It has also been eye-opening and life changing. However, with so much going on, I myself have felt many times that I just want to disappear. No more news reports, trending topics or texts about viruses, protesters, riots, job loss etc. Yet, each time I feel that way, I realize that I like you am needed in the world. I have much to offer as do you. People care about me as they do you.

Instead of disappearing, I realized when I feel like this I have to practice self-care even more. I have to be intentional about it. Those are the times to take the break from social media to do something enjoyable. They are the times to only watch a comedy on-demand and click off of the all-day news reports. They are also the times to create a list of the things I’m grateful for and make a list of the things I want to do and can do each day.

Disappearing and stepping back to allow myself to breath and re-fuel is more the response to an overwhelming period of stress that we are experiencing in today’s world. By doing so, this may be the difference between being stressed for a short period vs allowing stress to accumulate its negative impact in my body an cause long term issues. Stress is what needs to disappear. If you are unable to do this on your own, don’t be afraid to take the steps to find someone who knows how to help you find better stress coping strategies.
